Societal pressures

A lot of things in this world are driven by sosietal pressures - we can say that. to be more precise peer pressure.

the peer pressure has led to a lot of things , say your studies, you doing certain things in life. in my case my MBA is a bit due to peer pressure also. I have seen a lot fo my friends doign a lot fo things buying a lot of things esp electronics due to peer pressure. But somewhere down the line peer pressure influences some adverse effects.

Peer pressure is heavily reponsible for a lot fo nonsense done by people. Smoking is no 1, followed by drinking with drugs worse to follow. But off late there is a new trend because of peer pressure - Dating. Having a partner - girl friend or boy friend ( i still dont know whether dating equates to haing a BF or a GF. i am serious). Its like a fashion statement or a hep statement to say that i have a partner.

Recently a friend of mine came and told me that she was going around with the guy V and she was serious abt it. I was like - Excuse me? what nonsense. she was apparently telling us ( our group of friends) a while back that she was in a relationship with soem one but unfortunately broke off. fine it happens and we helped her. But then again a relationship within one month and serious , i was lke did you think abt it twice? but the best part of the story was the guy V, who again happens to be our class mate and the roomie of my gang . We very well knew about his relatioships and he was well settled with a partner in mumbai and he was telling abt his girl friend just a week back and how his parents like her. And suddenly this female comes and says that V has broken off with his old GF a coupel fo days back and came and proposed me . I found him to be good and accepted it.

Now give me a break ... was in a relationship til 2 days ago and then broke off and stated another one. What the hell is going around ???? have relationships become a commodity that can be traded in an open market. Once you lose a portfolio or lose interest in it, sell off and acquire another protfolio ? guys give due respect to the word relationship. I just asked the lady , is all these being done for the fashion of having a BF and you get your due respects in your party circles.

and now adding more spice to it , the girl tell us that, she spoke to teh guy's mom who happened to be very cool abt it. now this is really going over the top. people are playing around with relationships and parents are approving it instead of controlling it. Where are we headed to in india??? in the name of westernisation some creatures have destroyed the sanctity of relationships.

reading it you are confused rite whats happening. Not understanding it rite. somehting that is confusing and uncorrigable is relationship.

Athithi Devo Bhava

We indians have been taught one thing right from our yound age ' Athithi Devo Bhava ' meaning Guests are like gods. Treat them just as you treat gods.

But over the years that culture is changing. Changing in the sense , people are practicing it.. a lot more but with discreetion. Discretion is not based on caste but with benefit. What is in it for me. my old employer was always excellent in that. Their Motto itsef was Athithi Devo BHava - Treat the 'GUESTS' well. read between the lines .. As kamal hassan said -' Vellai karanukku salaam podarthu '.

People have observed it and implemented it according to their own defenition of Who atithi is.

earlier whoever came to my house was considered to be a guest , they were given atleast a minimum amount of respect . Be it a watchman or a electrician or a plumber . I have never seen my mother send a person away without giving them a coffee or a tea or atelast a glass or buttermilk.

Today i found myself crest fallen with attitude of people changing so much. Agreed you dont like a person but in a country where we treat even an enemy as a human being , seing such hospitality was heart breaking. I took a good friend of mine who had come here to my house to meet some common friends. and I go to this particular indian's house who half heartedly welcomed this guy. Ya agreed she was least intersted in seeing/talking to him but could she not even offer this guy a glass of water? leave alone this character , there was one more character standing next to it , could not she also offer this guy some water atleast? Have we become so materialistic that we forget some basics of life. Have we become so self centered that we forget the fact that what differntiate us from others is this small aspect of hospitality.

when you are outside India you boast about hospitality and service and what not.. Are these only eye wash or restricted only to the 'Vellai Kaarans and Vellai Kaaris' . theese people surely seemed to have taken a leaf out of some indian corporates books and following it sincerely.

These are things that cannot be taught .. it has to come automatically..

Right after this incident I took my friend to the gurudwara for langar and he goes there and does some Service after finishing the meal ( I ve never done it) . I was like stunned and speechless for a minute and in a sense made me feel ashamed. he comes to my city and does service in a temple where actually it was I who had to do it. After finishing the 'seva' he came to me and said ' We are brought up in a culture where service is important. It gives us some sense of satisfaction'.

What contrasting 2 things to happen in 2 hours. But defenitely I decided 1 thing. Service is important and I will also do it.

the Law of averages always stays.. when some one destroys the service mentality there is always some one to raise it up and balance it.

Toppers ..........

What I am going to say will be the truth that many would share... esp from india ... more speacially from the south...

let me clarify that this post is related to 90% of people. there are always exceptions.

there is always an association that you see with toppers.. selfishness. all through my life right from first standard till my college i found the first rankers to be very selfish. they never want to share anything with others. More to it , i find these people really mysterious. they are in a world of their own and do a lot of what i term 'underground' stuff.

the best part is they think that if they tell you something you will become the topper overtaking them.

What crap?... I find this attitude of people really wierd. it is acceptable when we are kids and this kind of attitude is displayed by people in primary school. but college...grow up you people... fine accepted you are just out of 12th standard and just coming to terms with realities.....

But..... after working like a donkey in a 'SO CALLED PROFFESSIONAL WORLD' you still do that in MBA...

is there smething called evolution of thoughts or not??? I am still wondering , but I am pretty sure this attitude will always continue.

In the name of Globalisation and fashion

Fashion...a buzzword.. not for the geeks...

Oxford dictionary defines it as ' popular trend, especially in dress' . Yeah its a popular trend. A trend to look good , dress well.. but the females of our country have got it miscued . They have got it to be maximum exposure..

in all these fashion trends. they have forgotten something vcalled our culture.. That too they do it only when they get out of India/out of home.. I was stunned by the way people ( read females) dress in infy and other it companies in india. But I was appalled and horrified by the way they do once they are out of India. its as if they are here to walk the ramps along with some fashion world models.

I seriously havge a question. ive not been able to understand - what hapiness do you get in exposing yourslef. Is this the only way to get attention. IS attention grabbing the sole aim??? Dont you have some thing called maintaining some decency.

You may be wondering , IS this idiot a paranoid - commenting like a Ram sene activist instead of enjoying whats going around..

It is good to watch these on TV , directly sometimes.. but when you see people from your country , who dont do this traditionally , you feel irritated. If you still think in a differnt way, come down to my college and , see the folks , how they behave and roam around flaunting their assets.. you will also feel the same.

Why?? Is this an effect of Globalisation???

Bluffing the way to glory

Folks where do you get to see the biggest bluffers and Bullshitters? Any thoughts...

dont think too much. Just get into any of the Business Schools ( pls leave IIMs out of this league. only the essay GMAT based schools) and just have a look at the profiles and essays and CVs of the candidates .. Good lord!!! If you happen to have some common sense you will be stunned to see the amount people bluff in their CVs. Its so appalling!!! take my word, if you read the CVs you will feel that the present days CEOs , COOs and CFOs forFortune 1000 companies are underachivers compared to what these people are. .. My only question..

Doesnt the admission team know how to validate a person's CV or letter????

Our CV books were out today and i was just having a look at it and was seriously shaken, dissapointed , angered and irritated by the amount of LIES people told.

Eg . A student in a 2nd tier eng college in a 3rd grade City gets sponsorship for some 50K GBP.. i just converted the amount.. 40 Lakhs!!! what nonsense.. even sarang is organised at a budget of around 20 Lakhs in chennai...

the next one is still better. there is this character who writes , is a COMPUTER SCIENCE ENGINEERING graduate was instrumental in setting up india's leading brokerage firm ( read ICICI DIRECT.) i just thought about some history when did ICICI direct start and it was somewhere in 2002 ( pls correct me if wrong) and then this character mite have been in first year of engineering ... isnt it stunning/irritating ???? KV kamath , Kalpana Moraparia , Chanda Kochar .. are you listening?? we have an esteemed ex-colleague amongst us who is trying to sell herelf hard.. pls recruit her..

Come on. you can just say blatant lies and that too of this magnitude.

Ok a disclaimer .. i dont say that i am a saint .. even i add spice. i mite call an OX a Bull . but boss here you are selling a donkey as a Horse !!! Isnt something called guilty conciousness not there in people's mind ?

No wonder we see madoffs , rajus and stannfords in this world... and when bluffers like this come to business schools and learn the art of telling a better polished lie , i am thinking how many more madoffs and stanfords will be made in the coming years????

God.. pls save this world!

Its not just your loss!

During my trip to Bombay this time , I decided to pay a visit to the TAJ and Oberoi. My friend Karadi accompanied me as he also had this interest to pay a visit to this place. Oberoi / Trident as it is known was looking rather subdued during the setting sun. The usually roaring Arabian sea was rather silent. Why not .? She has also bore the brunt of this . the people who come to meet her had reduced and she had also reduced her interest to play around.

After a quite walk around trident, we proceeded to meet the Queen on the sea front – The TAJ. There was very high security around that area. But that did not stop people from coming to visit the Gateway of India. We were standing by the seaface and watching the tides.

Suddenly we saw someone standing close to us wanting to speak to us with an eagerness in the eyes. We picked up a conversation with this unknown acquaintance. She stayed there and started telling how the attack had affected her.

“ We were shocked by the attack. I lost some friends some of my friends got injured in the crossfire. After the attack the police have cordoned off the area completely. No one can come near the gateway of india. They have put a barricade from the left of the monument to till the Taj. No one can come near the gateway or come and sit on the parapet walls opposite the Taj.

I had always been playing around happily around the Gateway and Taj. There used to be hordes of people walking around obstructing my play and running around. But that was fun .. me avoiding them , they avoiding me … But at the end of the day there were all my friends and I had a good time. Now I have all the space at my disposal and play and walk as I want , But I miss something. I feel there is no one with whom I can play around. “

Me and karadi stood there listening to her in silence. What can we say ?

She continued “ Probably I would be the most photogenic one and Photographed one in this world. Any one who comes here would photograph me and take a photograph alongside me. I used to enjoy the privilege.

But out of all these , what saddens me most is , I don’t get to see my most favourite group of people – Kids. They are my best friends . every kid likes to play with me and leap in joy when they see me and my team mates jump and run in unison. There used to be a special happiness when I could see a crying child, smile and laugh and forget itself when it sees me. It’s a special kind of feeling. Now I don’t see any kids . I don’t find that happiness… I feel lonely .. I don’t know when next I can make a kid laugh.”

There was a drop of tear that dropped from her eyes.

Karadi asked “ Aap apke rehne aur khana ke liye kya karte ho”

“ woh bhi abhi mushkil ho gaya hai… Anyone who came to gateway or Taj made it a point to buy me and my team some eatables and sometimes food. Now with no one allowed to come this side , I have to go in search of food. Its tough.

And you know Ramu kaka and Chotu are also having a dull business , as they used to earn by the food he used to sell for us.”

I was dumbstruck by the concern she had for people who cared for her.

“ Rehne ke liya Kya.??. Tata uncle has built the hotel again . me and my friends will find some space there.

But somehow , this attack has left me lonely. I have to go in search for someone to talk and feel comfortable”

We listened her patiently and then brought her some chana dal from Ramu kaka’s basket. She happily ate it , bade goodbye to both of us and flew away to her nest along with her fellow pigeons.

After she left, we just thought, what effect it has caused to every living being on earth.

I just thought of one song at that moment “ Vellai Pookkal Ulagam Engum malarave "
